of October, 1918. This battle was northeast of Rheims, in the Champagne Sector, France.
The Marines start off the offensive, and part of the 36th Division had to advance to fill in the gaps and support a precarious position some Marines had nicknamed "the box". Men from both divisions cooperated on Oct. 7 and 8 to capture the heavily machine gunned strong point of St. Etienne, a village two miles northwest of Blanc Mont. This proved to be the decisive blow. The battered Second Division was sent to the rear to rest and regroup, and the reserves took their place. These Soldiers regrouped and then executed a wild open field dash of thirteen miles to the River Aisne. By Oct. 13, the river line had stabilized, and the American divisions were to be returned to Pershing's forces.
